The KUA girls’ basketball team will return to the NEPSAC championship game after defeating #3 Proctor, 48-44, at home today. Gretchen Schissel got KUA on the scoreboard after knocking down a 10 footer just seconds into the game. It was a back and forth physical battle from then on out with Proctor holding a slim 4 point lead at the break, 21-17.
The Wildcats came bursting out of the locker room and went on a 17-3 run to take a 10 point lead behind the sharp outside shooting of Shannon Walsh and strong drives by Fiekah Fataar, Becca DeTurk and Kaitie Sanders. KUA had built a 14 point lead with 6 minutes to go, but the Hornets gave one final push and cut the lead to 3 with a minute to play. Clutch free throws by sophomore Jill Clark secured the victory and punched KUA’s ticket for their 9th trip to the finals since 1999.
Sophomore Shannon Walsh led all scorers with 20 points while senior co-captain Fiekah Fataar chipped in with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Rounding out the scoring was Kaitie Sanders ‘14 (6), Becca DeTurk ‘13 (4), Jill Clark ‘15 (4) and Schissel’13 (2).
KUA will face top-seeded Beaver Country Day School on Sunday, March 3rd at 1:00p.m. at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT.
