While the score reflects a lopsided battle, the Wildcats competed strongly in their season opener against a very athletic Seawolves squad. KUA controlled the first six minutes of the first quarter with a patient offensive series that resulted in three point blank shots. On attack, the trio of Max Abendroth, Alex Keiver, and Andrew Jarrett moved the ball effectively, finding shots and feeds to each other early in the game and continually throughout. Tabor’s talented keeper kept the score tied and in the opening quarter’s final two minutes Tabor netted three quick goals. Tabor came out strong in the second quarter and took advantage of KUA’s clearing woes leading to an 8-0 halftime lead. Early in the second half KUA’s Andrew Cole finally hit twine on a rocket from 12 yards only to have the goal disallowed because his stick head separated from his shaft on the shot. Abendroth finally netted KUA’s first goal off a Jon Spencer feed and then, 25 seconds later, middie Mike Robertello scoped up a rebound and put it away to narrow the lead to 8-2. The KUA defense, led by returning senior goalie Tim McNair, held Tabor scoreless late into the third quarter. Defensemen Kevin Vieira, Eric Bogart, Peter Prendergast, and Trey McDougall held the Tabor offense to mostly outside looks at the cage. With the Wildcats gaining momentum, Tabor managed to score the final two goals of the third quarter to maintain the eight-goal margin.
KUA missed a few good opportunities on their first possessions of the fourth quarter and Tabor, once again, found their offensive rhythm, scoring four in the game’s final eight minutes. KUA’s Andrew Jarrett scored the games final goal off of an Abendroth assist.
