KUA opened its 2011 season under clear, warm skies against the Pomfret School. KUA was quick out of the gate, scoring the first two goals in under two minutes. Max Abendroth (New London, NH) opened the scoring off a feed from Eric Wollrath (Groton, MA) and Drew Simoneau (Goffstown, MA) followed soon after with an unassisted blast of his own. The Wildcats hit the target in the offensive end and defended and cleared with confidence in front of their net. After the first quarter, KUA held a 3-2 lead. KUA lost its offensive momentum, however, in the second quarter. Many lost possessions in both ends gave Pomfret increasingly numerous chances to press the KUA defense. Santiago Morales (San Jeronimo, Mexico), playing in his first varsity contest, made a number of acrobatic saves, but the Pomfret attack found more and more ways to get shots off from in close. After a four goal run, Pomfret took a 6-3 lead into the half.
KUA’s hustle never faltered, as the Wildcats continued to compete on every ground ball. Still, Pomfret continued to gain possession on costly KUA mistakes and find the back of the Wildcat net. KUA had many chances of their own, though their shots were dead center or well wide. Despite many opportunities to get back in the contest, KUA could not convert their chances and the Pomfret lead increased. Ian Timpone (Concord, NH) scored in the third quarter and Abendroth, off a Simoneau feed, finished with a goal in the fourth.
Tim McNair, also playing his first game in net, recorded 5 saves for the Wildcats in the second half. Senior defenseman Miles Hancock (New Rochelle, NY) was a force on defense and PGs Andrew Kelly(Sudbury, MA) and Alex Skinner (Ottawa, Canada) also played steady, disciplined lacrosse in their first games as Wildcats.
KUA (0-1) travels to Williston on Wednesday for a late afternoon game.
