KUA jumped out to a 5-0 on the road against Class B Brooks and eventually increased the lead to 13 (26-13) with 1:22 left in the half. Brooks, however, came storming back and went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to 6 at the intermission. Senior Bianca Brenz did her part by grabbing 9 rebounds in the opening stanza while Gabby Diaz went 3-for-6 from downtown and Fiekah Fataar was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Ice cold shooting (5-for-22), lack of defensive intensity and turnovers plagued the Cats in the 2nd half. KUA secured just 9 rebounds in the final 16 minutes, only one of which was on the offensive end. This allowed the hosts to take a 11 point lead with 6 minutes to play. Better ball movement and a commitment to get the ball inside helped Kimball Union go on a 10-3 run and cut the lead to 4 with 23 seconds remaining. With no time outs remaining and the clock ticking, the Wildcats were forced to foul. Brooks connected on 3 of 4 opportunities to build their lead back up to 6. Point Guard Gabby Diaz hit a 3 just before the buzzer to bring the final score to 48-45 in favor of Brooks. This was a missed opportunity for the Wildcats who are fighting for a spot in the Class C New England Tournament. We must come to play every minute of every game.
Diaz was the leading scorer on the day with 16 points, 3 assists and 6 steals. Brenz finished the day with a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with 7 points. Fataar and Autumn Kariuki chipped in 10 and 9 points respectively.
