The Lady Wildcats battled to the very end today but they came up just short against Lakes Region League foe Tilton (3-0) on the road. The Cats raced out to a 5-0 run but the Rams responded with a few buckets of their own. Tilton’s Diana Bill ‘11 drained 4 threes in the first stanza while KUA’s Gabby Diaz ‘12 netted 3 threes to keep things interesting. Although the Cats held a slight advantage in rebounds (Tri-Captain Bianca Brenz had 5 defensive boards in the 1st 5 minutes of the game) they found themselves down by 1 at the break (29-28). Tilton came out strong after the intermission going on a 6-0 run but the Wildcats showed mental and physical fortitude by buckling down on defense and driving hard to the hoop. KUA’s Emily Kelly and Bianca Brenz drew a combined 3 offensive charges and again KUA won the battle of the boards but poor shooting from the charity stripe continued to plague them. KUA connected on just 1 of 5 free throws while Tilton made 13 of 22. Strong defense by Kelly helped slow down the offensive production of Tilton’s Daisy Jordan and Diaz’ 4th three of the game cut the Rams’ lead to 3 with under two minutes to play. With time running out KUA was forced to foul and Tilton hit 4 of 8 freebies to pull out the victory.
KUA received strong efforts from all team members and their collective hard work and commitment are signs of good things to come. Seven different Wildcats got into the scoring column with Gabby Diaz netting a team-high 19 points. Brenz just missed recording a double-double on the day with 10 rebounds and 9 points. Sophomore Rafeegah Fataar chipped in with 8 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Autumn Kariuki was once again strong on the boards pulling in 7 boards and Rebecca DeTurk and Kaitie Sanders played their usual stingy defense.
KUA drops to 2-1 on the young season and will look to rebound from the loss when they travel to Berwick Academy for a two-day Holiday Hoops Tournament on December 17th and 18th.
