The Lady Wildcats hosted Class B Governors Academy in the last regular season game of the winter today and came up on the short end of a 53-33 decision. Down 6 points at the half due to some Govs turnovers and strong rebounding by KUA's Autumn Kariuki (8 first half boards), the Cats were hoping for an upset. The Govs turned up the defensive heat in the second half, however, and forced Kimball Union to shoot a mere 20% from the floor (5-for-23). Although the Wildcats were able to get to the free throw line, they were only able to connect on 12-of-22 attempts.
Gabby Diaz was the lone player in double figures with 12 points. She was closely followed by her sister Greydy with 9. Autumn Kariuki led the rebounding charge with 11 while Greydy pulled down 7 and Tori Agel chipped in with 6. Shelby Pillsbury returned to the line-up after nursing a torn ACL for several weeks and hauled in 5 rebounds. Ainsley MacDonald anchored the defense while grabbing 4 rebounds and nabbing 2 steals.
A ceremony following the game honored seniors Agel, Pillsbury, MacDonald and Diaz - four year members of the varsity basketball program. These student-athletes have been instrumental in KUA's basketball success over the past four years and they will be sorely missed.
The Wildcats now turn their attention to the upcoming NEPSAC tournament. KUA is seeded #5 and will play at Holderness (#4) on Wednesday, March 3rd. Tip-off is at 3:00p.m. This year will mark the 13th consecutive season that KUA has earned a playoff berth. Go KU!!!!
