KUA Boys Basketball team entertained Brimmer and May School today in Meriden in a crucial Class B match-up. Both teams, sporting similar records, are currently vying for a spot in the NEAPSAC post season tournament and thus the result was important for both squads. KUA came out on top in a gutty performance 53-42.
The clear message of the day was to defend and defend well. The Wildcats did just that, holding talented offensive minded Brimmer to 17 first half points as they built a double digit lead at the half 33-17. Brimmer came out of the locker room determined to make it a game as they quickly cut into KUA’s lead with a 10-0 run to make it a 6 point deficit. KUA was able to maintain a small lead throughout the second half and only at the end did they extend it to the final margin of 11. Leslie Smith had his fifth straight game in double figures scoring a game high 22 points today as well as holding a dangerous Eric Alleyne at bay for most of the night. Keith Callies had another strong game at both ends of the court, scoring 12 and applying constant defensive pressure on Derek Retos. Retos, always a threat to score from the perimeter, ended with 8 points for the game. KUA’s Gus Cruz was a clear presence on the boards tonight, scoring six points off of offensive rebounds and put backs. This win, KUA’s fourth straight puts season record at 11-8 with a game next Wednesday vs Tilton as their next test.
