Despite shooting a dismal 30% from the floor and 50% from the free throw line, the Lady Wildcats were able to hold off a feisty Brooks team for a solid 45-36 win at home. It has been quite a week for the Kimball Union Cats as yet another starter went down in practice. Senior captain Shelby Pillsbury damaged her MCL and joins Bianca Brenz '11 on the sidelines until further notice. The remaining healthy players did not dwell on the negative, however, but instead got right to business knocking off three strong teams in 4 days (Deerfield, Holderness and Brooks). Leading the charge was Autumn Kariuki, a sophomore power forward who is coming into her own at just the right time. Kariuki was instrumental in all three wins hitting big time shots at crucial moments in the ball games. She couldn't have done it alone though as her teammates worked hard to get her the ball in the post.
In the win over Brooks, Kariuki posted her first double-double of the season netting a season-high 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Also in double-figures for the Cats was Tori Agel with 11 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals and Gabby Diaz '12 with 10 points, 3 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Ainsley MacDonald and Becca DeTurk played strong defensive games while combining for 10 boards and several steals. It was not pretty... but a win is a win.
KUA improves to 11-5 on the season and will travel to NMH on Wednesday and Cushing on Saturday. Go Wildcats!
