After a sloppy first half in the opening round of the Beaver Country Day School Tournament, the KUA Wildcats came out with increased defensive intensity and moved the ball much better after the break cruising to a 42-22 victory over previously unbeaten Southfield School. Senior Shelby Pillsbury did a nice job on the boards pulling down a team high 8 rebounds followed by Tori Agel with 7 and Gabby Diaz, Greydy Diaz and Bianca Brenz with 5 apiece.
Tough defense by the Cats held Southfield to just 5 second half points. Brenz led the team with 7 steals while Agel chipped in with 5. Ainsley MacDonald continues to be our defensive stopper as she is regularly matched up with the opposing team's best player.
The Cats shot just 28% for the game from the field but did a much better job from the charity stripe shooting 75% (9-for-12). Greydy Diaz led the team with 12 points and freshman Gretchen Schissel scored her first varsity points of the season with a bucket and a free throw for the last three points of the ball game. Gabby Diaz dished out 5 assists while Agel contributed 4 assists on the evening.
KUA, now 3-1, will face host Beaver Coutnry Day School in the Championship game on Friday at 4p.m.
