The Kimball Union Girls’ Varsity Basketball team was crowned the CHAMPIONS in the Beaver Country Day School (Chestnut Hill, MA) Holiday Hoops Tournament over the weekend. KUA knocked off two previously undefeated teams, including the hosts, en route to the championship. In Thursday’s match-up, senior Greydy Diaz netted a team-high 12 points and helped her team overcome a 1 point deficit at the break. The Cats upped the intensity on the defensive end in the second half and held Southfield School to just 5 points in the final 16 minutes. Newport’s Gretchen Schissel ’13 sank her first varsity points as she added a bucket and free throw in the 42-22 victory.
KUA found themselves down by 2 points at the break in the championship game against BCDS due to a woeful 26% shooting from the floor. However, Greydy Diaz once again caught fire contributing 15 second half points to lift the Wildcats to a 44-37 victory and was named Tournament MVP. Sophomore point guard Gabriella Diaz contributed 9 points (including 4 free throw in the final minute), 5 assists and 8 steals. Bianca Brenz chipped in with 10 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Shelby Pillsbury and Gabriella Diaz combined to draw 3 charges on the day. Senior Ainsley MacDonald was the defensive player of the game as she held Beaver's prolific scorer, Daisy Jordan, to just 12 points and helped in fouling out the talented center.
KUA improves to 4-1 on the season. The team is off until January 8th when they host the 4th Annual KUA Alumnae Game in Alumni Gymnasium at 7p.m.
