Playing on neutral turf at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA, Kimball Union varsity boys’ lacrosse dropped their 2006 opener 10 – 6, to Pomfret School. Pomfret struck early, winning the first face off and scoring a settled goal shortly thereafter. Evan Roberts (West Cornwall, VT) tied the game soon after but an errant clear spotted Pomfret a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. The second period was a frustrating one for Kimball Union as they continued to turn the ball over in clearing situations, went man down three times resulting in two goals and generally could not sustain or finish in their offensive end. This resulted in a commanding 7-1 Pomfret lead at half time. Unwilling to concede, the Wildcats elevated their game during the third period, outscoring Pomfret 3-1. Roberts (unassisted), Jamie Schmidt (Shelburne, VT) assisted by Jeff Galvin (Meriden, NH) and Sean Lavin (North Easton, MA) assisted by Galvin, each tallied once. Trailing 8-4 at the top of the fourth, Kimball Union began to ride and clear more effectively and continued to create more offensive opportunities resulting in a third goal on the night from Roberts (unassisted) and a final goal by Jeff Galvin with an assist going to Donner Carr (East Greenwich, RI). Despite the loss, the Wildcats continually improved throughout the second half. Trevor McGraw (Meriden, NH) played a solid all around game at close defense as did both Josh Boissoneau (Bedford, NH) and Andrew Richardson (Lancaster, MA) at the long stick middie position. Goalie Brian Holland (Barrington, RI) had 14 saves on the night. The Wildcats resume early season action on Wednesday when they travel to Deerfield, MA to take on the powerful Deerfield Academy Big Green, nationally ranked in the top 25 last year. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30.
