In his autobiography, Mark Twain wrote, “There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely, but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.”
This statement can be used to describe writing and this has certainly been true this year. How many times has Coach Custer or I sat down to write the same story? We played hard, dominated most of the game, displayed strong offense and defense, and still lost. Often the final score definitely did not reflect the quality of our play. For our write-ups, we have drawn inspiration from the likes of Shakespeare, Einstein, the Grimm Brothers, Robert Fulghum, Albert Camus, Sophocles, and Samuel Beckett, and looked to the topography of the Twin States, the movie Groundhog Day, and have even attempted poetry to find motivation.
Here is a Tanka to commemorate our last match:
Ollie places a
Sweet PK!! We’re up halfway
Through the match! And yet,
Lackluster shots squeak by us
And they defeat us by one.
For our final game, we had all of our boys except Kohki, who is still on the DL. Aidan Davie joined us for his last KUA match. All of our seniors joined the starting and ending lineups. We want to give special thanks to our seniors Cam Barton, Ollie Cozzi, Brian Lee, Trong Phan, Jacob Rimberg, and Kohki Shinohara who worked tirelessly this year and, for many, for the last four years. We greatly enjoyed working with you all. In addition, we had five juniors: Jacob Hebbel, Tom Huang, Amir Lesbek, and Will Sewell; four sophomores: Mario Espurz Garcia, Michael Jung, Conrad Lopez Moss, and Will Stedinia; and four freshmen: Leo Barta, Adi Lesbek, Simon Nowlan, and Ian Surgenor. We had quite a mix this year! We thank the seniors and hope to see many of the younger players back next year!
It’s hard to believe that the season is officially over. While the early weeks seemed to be endless, once we got going the time moved very quickly. Best of luck in your winter and spring sports and we hope to see you again next year when the leaves begin to change!
