KUA Seniors Commended for PSAT Results

Two Kimball Union Academy seniors were recently recognized for their performances on the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Zimao “Marco” ’26, of Shanghai, China; and Haoyuan “William” ’26, of Tianjin, China; both scored among the top 3 percent of the more than 1.3 million juniors who took the PSAT last fall. Marco and William earned Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and received resounding applause from classmates and faculty alike during an All-School Meeting earlier this month.

“Recognizing Marco and William at ASM was incredible,” said Interim Academic Dean and history teacher William Diamond, who announced the students’ commendations during the twice-weekly assembly. “Their inquiry-based approach to learning exemplifies one way that they challenge their teachers and peers to consider alternative possibilities, elevating the level of discourse in the classroom. Reflection, followed by analysis, and extending queries into theories behind mathematics or geopolitical events is a hallmark of how William and Marco excel in our most rigorous classes.”

Established in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships. The program is conducted by the NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance.

As Commended Students, Marco and William remain eligible for additional scholarship opportunities offered by sponsors of the program.
