Boys' Varsity Hockey are Lakes Regions Champions!

Sunday March 1: KUA 5 Proctor 4

The KUA Boys Varsity Hockey Team edged Proctor Academy by a score of 5-4 to win the Lakes Region Championship.  KUA started slow and found themselves down 2-0 heading into the second period.  KUA would rebound with a solid second period, putting the pressure on early but failing to break the shut out until late in the second.  Senior Assistant Captain Justin Wright broke down the right side and snapped off a couple shots and one finally rebounded to Sophomore Gabriel Veilleux and he finished to put KUA on the board.  Minutes later KUA would even the score when PG Andrew Murmes snapped a shot five hole on the power play, assists went to Senior Captain Michael Basist and Junior Josh Dollinger.
The score remained 2-2 heading into the third.  Minutes into the third period Proctor would scored off a face-off to take a 3-2 lead.  The Wildcats would not get rattled and continued to press as their hard work paid off when Murmes found fellow PG Kyle Curry in front, Curry one timed the puck five hole to even the score.  Minutes later PG Zach Musgrave took a cross ice pass in the neutral zone and beat the Proctor defenseman, he then snapped a quick wrist shot into the far side of the net.  It would be Musgrave again who would extend the KUA lead as he scored off his backhand in the slot for his second goal of the night.  With five minutes remaining Proctor closed on KUA and made it a one goal game.  The next four minutes the KUA forwards worked extremely hard to keep Proctor hemmed in their zone.  The Wildcats took a penalty with 36 seconds left, but the penalty kill held strong and closed out the game for the Championship.  Sophomore Steve Mastalerz was credited with the win making a number of nice saves.  The Wildcats will try for another title as they travel to the Mid-West Prep Invitational in Culver, IN at the end of the week.
