Janie Cozzi, Class of 2019

Dear Kimball Union,

We are heartbroken to have lost a precious member of our school in a senseless and horrible car crash.

Janie Cozzi, class of 2019, was a bright light in our community. She had returned home for the long weekend, and was traveling on Interstate 89 with four of her hometown friends from Waterbury, Fayston, and Moretown, Vermont when they were all killed by a man driving in the wrong direction on the highway.

We have received messages of support from around the globe, from parents, alumni, schools across the country, and friends of Kimball Union. These messages are providing comfort, helping to lift up our students and our School in these sorrowful hours and days.

We have faculty and staff, clergy, and professional support in place for grieving students, parents, and friends.

Some students are returning early from break to be together. A number of students will join faculty at a candlelight vigil at 6 pm this evening in Moretown, VT at Harwood Union High School. The candlelight vigil will honor the lives lost and offer support for anyone affected by this tragedy. We will gather as a school when we are back in full session and professional guidance will remain in place as long as necessary.

The strength of the Kimball Union community has always been built on and derived from the love and care we have for each and every student.  As we grieve and share our love of one another, we know our full Community is alongside with us.

Our hearts and prayers are with Janie's family and friends, the four children and their families, our collective communities, and Kimball Union.

Thank you one and all for your deep concern and faithful support.

Sincerely,

Mike Schafer
