College Planning Weekend

Kimball Union Academy will host its annual College Planning Weekend for Junior Parents and their families in two weeks time, February 12-13. The weekend is designed as a launching point into the college application process, and is part of our integrated advising program. Delivered in a workshop format, this weekend is a great opportunity to learn how our school approaches the college application process and how we work with families on college placement.

The weekend kicks off with a role reversal. Parents and students serve as admission officers of a fictitious, but highly accurate and competitive University. Given the applications they have to review, which students would be accepted? Denied? Wait-listed? By evaluating potential candidates, families begin to understand key triggers and strategies used by admission offices to evaluate applications.

Additionally, families will have a rundown on everything from the college application process timeline, a directory of Kimball Union’s on-campus college advisors, our school’s profile (and how it’s used), and a thorough analysis of the variety of entrance testing available here on campus. Would your child benefit more from taking the SAT or the ACT? Have you heard the SAT has changed? What do you need to know? Our college advising office will walk you through these questions and more.

On Saturday, families will further understand Kimball Union’s philosophy around the college application process. What is the responsibility of your family? What is the school responsible for? How will every student be supported? How is the experience unique for your child? Our college advisors will be on hand and will facilitate the conversation.

Before the day wraps up, families will have exposure to a panel of college admission professionals. We’ve connected with esteemed Admission Officers to address your questions. Coming from a public university, a private liberal-arts college, and an ivy-league institution, the College Panelists will give direct insight into the application process, including their first hand observations and suggestions for applicants.
