  • KUA Drops First Match Since Season Opener

    KUA hosted Saint Paul’s this Friday for an evening match at the Muller tennis courts. The match got off to a quick start in singles. Tomas Mazura was matched up against his toughest opponent of the year and lost his first set 0-6. Tomas fought to push the second set to a tie break but was unable to further the match to a third set tie break. The final score was 0-6, 6-7 (0-7) in Saint Paul’s favor. The overall match could not have been much tighter as four of the remaining five singles matches all went to third set tie breaks, and close ones as well. Carlos #2 lost his match 4-6, 6-2 (9-11), Jon Schafer #3 lost 6-4, 3-6 (9-11), Kelvin Zhang #5 lost 6-3 4-6 (8-10), and Sean Donoghue #6 pulled off another specular win 5-7 6-4 (10-8). Ethan Crandlemire #4 cruised to a quick first set win, but his opponent picked up the in the second set, yet Ethan was able to pull out 6-1, 7-5 victory. Heading into doubles KUA needed to win all three matches, but was only able to take one. Ethan Crandlemire and Carlos Melgarejo finished off an undefeated season at the #2 doubles position with an 8-4 victory. KUA looks forward to playing in the Lakes Region tournament this Saturday at New Hampton.

  • KUA Squeezes Out a Win Against Exeter

    In what was KUA’s most impressive win of the season, the Wildcats squeezed out a 5-4 victory and handed Exeter their first loss of the season. The Wildcats got off to a slow start in singles. Everyone except Tomas Mazura lost the first set. However, the Wildcats did not give up. Both Carlos Melgarejo (6-7, 6-3, (7-5)) and Sean Donoghue (4-6, 7-5, (10-5)) came back from a set down to win in a third set tiebreak. Tomas Mazura also won his match in a third set tiebreak (6-4, 1-6 (10-7)) The match was tied 3-3 entering doubles. Carlos and Ethan continued their undefeated season and cruised to an 8-3 victory. After finding themselves down early, Sean Donoghue and Jakob Frowein fought back to 5-6 but were not able to pull of the comeback, losing their match 6-8. With the match tied 4-4 the teams looked to the first doubles position to decide the match. Tomas Mazura and Jon Schafer were able to fight back from a slow 0-3 start and found themselves up 7-5, forty-love. Exeter stayed consistent and was able to force KUA to deuce, but then sailed a backhand long and KUA won their biggest match of the season. The Wildcats look to continue their winning ways this Friday against Saint Paul’s for the Lakes Region Championship.

  • KUA Defeats New Hampton

    KUA with another 8-1 win over New Hampton. Tomas Mazura #1 won his singles match 6-4, 6-0. Carlos Melgarejo #2 and Jon Schafer #3 both had a great day of serving to help them pull out wins in their mathes. Ethan Crandlemire #4 dominated the pace of play and easily won his match-up 6-0, 6-3. Sean Donahue #5 won his match 7-5, 6-4. Donoghue was up 5-2 in both sets and struggled at first to close it out, but was able to find a way before his opponent had a chance to take the lead. Bridger Close #6 lost in third set tiebreak, but won the first set 16-14 in a tiebreak. For doubles, Tomas and Jon #1 found their way to an easy win. Carlos and Ethan #2 won 8-1 with the best doubles match they have played all year. The boys played with quick hands at the net and stayed aggressive the entire match. Sean and Jakon Frowein dominated their match from both the baseline and the net, winning their match 8-1.

    KUA with another strong showing against Proctor, winning 9-0. It was a cloudy day, but the rain held off long enough to squeeze in the match. Tomas Mazura #1 cruised to a quick 8-0 victory holding serve with easy and staying aggressive with his return of serve. Carlos Melgarejo #2 got off to a strong start and kept momentum to win his match 8-2. Jon Schafer #3 was able to find his stride and found his way to an easy win 8-0. Ethan Crandlemire #4 dominated from the start and also won his match 8-0. Kelvin Zhang #5 and Jacob Frowein both had great performances on their forehand side, both winning their singles matches. For doubles, Carlos and Ethan moved up to the #1 doubles position and continued their dominance as doubles partners winning 8-3. Sean Donoghue and Mario Villarreal Sánchez #2 showed great chemistry in their first match together and found their way to a win. Andy Lin and Bridger Close #3 started off slow, but quickly began to dominate the pace of play in their win.

    KUA had another dominant showing on Wednesday, defeating Holderness 9-0. Starting things off with singles, Tomas Mazura #1 played strong on his forehand side and stayed consistent on the backhand side to win his match 8-1. Carlos Melgarejo #2 also won his match 8-2. Ethan Crandlemire #3 played defensively making his opponent play one extra ball each point and won his match with a score of 8-2. Bridger Close #4 cruised to his second consecutive 8-0 win. Mario Villarreal Sánchez started off very tentative, but then realized he needed to become more aggressive and won his match 8-3. Jakob Frowein #6 played some great backhand shots, winning his match 8-0. For doubles, Bridger Close had his debut at the #1 position with Tomas Mazura and the boys cruised to an 8-1 victory. Carlos and Ethan #2 continued their dominance as a pair winning 8-0. Andy Lin and Kelvin Zhang absolutely dominated the serving game, helping them win their match 8-5. KUA hopes to take this momentum into their following matches.

    KUA had another dominant Lakes Region performance beating Vermont Academy 9-0. The lineup for the day: Tomas Mazura #1, Carlos Melgarejo #2, Jon Schafer #3, Ethan Crandlemire #4, Kelvin Zhang #5, and Bridger Close #6. Each player quickly found their stride and controlled the pace of play. Bridger had a great day of serves of was strong on his forehand side. For doubles the lineup was Tomas and Sean Donahue #1, Ethan and Carlos #2, and Mario Villarreal Sanchez and Jakob Frowein #3. The team chemistry was at an all time high and each pair found their way to an easy win.

  • KUA Continues Their Winning Streak

    On Friday, Kimball Union traveled to Proctor where they dominated in an 8-1 win. KUA started the day off with singles. Carlos Melgarejo #1 lost a back and forth match 8-9 (5-7). He did well to step into the court and take time away from his opponent, but his inconsistency in his service game gave away too many free points. Ethan Crandlemire #2 cruised to an 8-0 victory. Sean Donoghue #3 put forth a strong effort and won his match 8-4 after finding himself down 3-0. Mario Villarreal Sánchez #4, Bridger Close #5, and Jakob Frowein #6 all dominated their games winning 8-0. KUA moved on the sweep New Hampton in the doubles matches. Sean Donoghue and Jon Schafer #1 took home the 8-4 win. Carlos Melgarejo and Ethan Crandlemire continued their winning streak as a pair winning 8-3. Andy Lin and Mario Villareal Sánchez showed great chemistry to easily win their match 8-0.

Jon Schafer #2 dominated the first set winning 6-2 and closed off the match winning the second set 7-5. Kelvin Zhang #3 stayed strong and dominated on his forehand side winning his match 6-2, 6-0. Carlos Melgarejo #4 closed out his match with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Sean Donoghue #5 played a solid game but struggled to stay consistent from the baseline and fell short losing his match 4-6, 2-6. Bridger Close #6 cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win. KUA stayed strong in doubles with winning all three matches. The closest match of the day was at the #2 doubles position as Ethan Crandlemire and Carlos Melgarejo fought back to win 9-8 (7-5) after going down 2-5.

    Strong play across the board from all of the Wildcats this weekend. The team was missing 3 of their top 5 players, but that did not slow them down. Kelvin Zhang took over the #1 singles spot and won 6-4 7-5. Carlos Melgarejo #2 cruised to a quick 6-2 6-0 victory. Sean Donoghue #3 won his match 6-1 6-1. Mario Villareal #4 also won 6-1 6-1. Bridger close moved up to the #5 spot and hung tough, pulling out a 6-3 6-2 win against a tough opponent. Jakob Frowein #6 cruised to a 6-0 6-0 victory. The best match of the day was at the first doubles position. It was a back and forth competition that KUA was able to pull out 9-7 before being forced to a tie break. Carlos Melgarejo and Jakob Frowein (#2 doubles) won their match 8-3 and Bridger Close and Mario Villareal (#3 doubles) also won their match 8-3. KUA hosts New Hampton School this Wednesday and looks to continue their winning ways.

    KUA with a strong win against Cardigan on Wednesday. The played 8 game pro sets for both singles and doubles. Kelvin Zhang #2 dominated his match, winning 8-3. Jon Schafer #3 stayed aggressive and dominated on his forehand side winning his match 8-5. Carlos Melgarejo #4 closed out his match with an 8-6 win after his opponent crawled back from 5-2 down. Ethan Crandelmire #5 stayed strong and won his match 8-4. Bridger Close #6 cruised to an 8-3 victory after a slow start. In doubles, KUA continued their dominance winning all three matches.     Tough loss for KUA against NMH on Saturday. KUA started the day off with doubles matches. Tomas Mazura and Kelvin Zhang played #1 and lost in a tie break (9-11). Ethan Crandlemire and Carlos Melgarejo played #2 and won 8-6. Andy Lin and Mario Villareal played #3 and lost their match 4-8. As for singles: Tomas #1 lost 1-6, 3-6. Carlos #3 had a tough loss after being up 9-3 in a third set tie break. Ethan #3 won his match 6-1, 6-4. Jakob Frowein #4 lost his match 4-6, 3-6. Mario #5 lost his match 3-6, 2-6. Bridger Close won his match 7-5 4-6 (11-9) with a great comeback after being down 5-2 in his first set. Player of the match goes to Ethan Crandlemire who won both of his matches. KUA hits the road on Wednesday for their first away match against Cardigan.
