Will '18 - Cullman Scholar at the New Hampshire Fire Academy

Will '18
Created in 1983 by Hugh Cullman '42, the Cullman Scholarship Program supports students in off-campus study opportunities. During the summer of 2017, nine scholarship recipients pursued courses of study in topics ranging from Mindfulness in Nepal to Animal Rehabilitation in South Africa. Recently, Will '18, a member of Kimball Union’s Fire Brigade, gave a presentation at All School Meeting about his Cullman Scholarship at the New Hampshire Fire Academy’s Recruit School.

Here’s Will…

I attended a ten-week Firefighter One and Two intensive at the New Hampshire Fire Academy. Days began at 0600 with chores and, for the first four weeks, by 0815 we were in the classroom. Week five was Hose Week, marking a shift from lectures to fast-paced days on the drill yard.

In the drill yard, we were in full gear by 0815, ready to practice the fundamentals of firefighting: moving charged hoses, venting roofs, and advanced rescue techniques, like vehicle extraction and rappelling from buildings. After class and drills, we had group study and dinner from 1800 until 2400.

Recruit School culminated in a day of drills and certification exams. We broke into companies, each assigned to a station. The course coordinator dispatched each company to a call within the drill yard, which became a miniature fire district. The final drill simulated a night club fire, and all companies worked to extinguish the fire and rescue victims (they were only mannequins.)

I would like to thanks the Cullman Family for the opportunity to explore a potential career and to bring valuable skill back to the Upper Valley and Kimball Union communities.

Faculty Advisor to The Fire Brigade, Darrell Beaupre '86, P '16, '20, confirms the impact this Cullman Scholarship experience. “Will brought his newly learned skills back to the firehouse this year and led several of the instructional training sessions with our newest recruits – he was amazing! It is clear that he absorbed every bit of what he was taught last summer, and his passion for the fire service is evident. He was a stellar instructor.”

Thank you Will and Darrell, and stay tuned for more Cullman Scholarship news.
