Nutrition and Sleep

Nutrition and Sleep; Learning the Facts.

Guest speakers and advisor meetings help students embrace healthy habits.

Understanding and managing Health and Wellness will be a focus this year in our student life "compass" program.  Educating students on positive behaviors and giving them accurate information on maintaining a healthy lifestyle will be on ongoing theme.

Nutrition
At all school meeting on Thursday, September 21 we welcomed David Ellis a Registered Dietician and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist to share his expertise about nutrition.  Dave has worked extensively with USA Hockey, The New England Patriots, the NHL, and other NFL Teams offering sports nutrition consultation.  Most recently, he has been hired by the Major League Baseball as the first official Registered Dietician of MLB.  Dave shared his “Fueling Tactics” program, which he designed, to help the athletes he works with in 3 areas:
·     Less downtime due to illness
·     More energy “onboard” for training
·     Faster recovery
He provided an easy to follow outline identifying a wide variety of foods, their nutritional value and the best portions to consume them in. We identified areas to pay attention to and were encouraged to make informed and balanced choices.
Dave also connected our own SAGE dining services’ spotlight program, which identifies the foods we serve every day in our dining hall, to how they should fit into your daily nutrition. During Compass Advisory period this week we further discussed our personal nutrition habits and how we might grade ourselves in our daily eating habits.

Sleep

During this compass period we also tackled the question of sleep.  Our interactive meeting included a “sleep” quiz and referring to sleep facts on WebMD to better understand the truth around the importance of rest.  Exploring and sharing our own routines and habits around sleep with our advisor group allowed us to share ideas we can all apply to a daily routine that will lead to a successful year.
