Elliot '18 Earns Eagle Scout

Stephen Rogers '04, Faculty
Elliot is a balanced and committed member of the class of 2018.
He has served as dorm proctor for two years, played varsity Soccer and Rugby, has earned a reputation as a technical theatre guru in Theatre Activity (often juggling this commitment with demanding athletic practice schedules,) and will graduate this year with the distinction of Global Scholar, all while achieving honors each trimester.

In addition to his success on the Hilltop, Elliot has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America since he was in the second grade and is a member of Troop 1 Harvard, or T1H in Harvard, Massachusetts. In the last 7 years with T1H, Elliot has completed a week-long high adventure canoe trip in the boundary waters of Minnesota, attended scout camps where he was named Honor Camper, and has earned numerous merit badges.

In the Boy Scouts, the highest rank is the designation of Eagle Scout, a recognition that only 4% of Scouts achieve. Boy Scouts of America describe the rank as, “not just an award; it is a state of being. Those who earned it as boys continue to earn it every day as men. That is why an Eagle Scout IS an Eagle Scout—not was.” To become an Eagle Scout, one must earn 21 merit badges and perform a project that serves the local community. Additionally, Eagle Scouts can earn Bronze, Gold, or Silver palms, for earning 5, 10, or 15, more merit badges above the required 21.

Nine months ago, Elliot designed, constructed, and implemented a covered trash, recycling, and lost-and-found shed for the Harvard Community’s largest set of public soccer fields. With the completion of this service project, Elliot has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, surpassing the 21-badge requirement to earn Bronze, Gold, and Silver palms for his 36 merit badges. Elliot has also been inducted into the Order of the Arrow, the Scouts National Honors society, a designation voted on by fellow members of the troop based primarily on leadership. Elliot’s Eagle Scout court of honor will take place the first weekend in November.

To quote Head of School Mike Schafer in a letter to the Harvard Boy Scouts, “Congratulations to Elliot, his entire family, and the Harvard Boy scouts for this tremendous honor.”
