Born January 7, 1929, in Suffield, Conn., he was the son of the late Howard Elry Caldwell, Sr. and Eleanor (St. John) Caldwell and stepson of Connie (Baumes) Caldwell. Howie resided in Suffield, Conn., for over 45 years. As son of the town's pharmacist and grandson of the town's doctor, Suffield held many fond memories and friends that he would recount in stories told again and again. Howie graduated from Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire in 1947 where he excelled as a running back in football, and from Boston University in 1952. He served the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and upon discharge, joined his uncle, "Hunts" St John at L.W. St. John Insurance Agency in Suffield where he worked for over 20 years. After moving to Marblehead in 1974 he was Sales Director at L.B. Moody in Beverly, and later worked at the Peabody Essex Museum. Howie will be remembered for his love of life, charismatic personality, sense of humor, and infectious laugh. He could often be found in local establishments entertaining patrons with a joke, historical or political facts, or just good conversation. Howie was "the life of the party who could light up a room" and made a lasting impression on everyone he met. He is survived by his daughter, Blaire E. Caldwell and her husband, Andrew Finestone of Salem, Mass.; two sons, Gregory M. Caldwell and his wife, Cheryl of Newbury, Mass., and Timothy S. Caldwell of Salem, Mass.; three grandchildren, Nicholas Finestone of Salem, Abigail and Elizabeth Caldwell of Newbury. He is also survived by his brother, William S. Caldwell and his wife, Marilyn of Cary, N.C.; his dear cousin, Sandra Disch of Bailey Island, Maine; his brothers-in-law, Ronald Malcolm and his wife, Elaine of Palmetto, Fla., Deane Malcolm and his wife, Barbara, of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his dear friend, Helen Bielawa. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce (Malcolm) Caldwell; his dear cousin, Nancy Gallant; and his beloved aunt, Bea Swaim. A Celebration of Life Memorial will take place Monday, September 19, 5 to 8 p.m. at Olde Main Street Pub, 121 Essex Street, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer Association online at www.alz.org to further their research of Alzheimer's, FTD and other forms of dementia.
