Josepf. W. Butler

Joseph W. Butler, 92, died peacefully on July 23, 2015. Born in Winchester, MA on September 10, 1922, he was the son of Joseph Warner Butler and Florence (Waring) Butler. He was a long time resident of Winchester and a summer resident of Annisquam, until he retired to Yarmouth Port. Joe attended Winchester High School and Kimball Union Academy. Subsequently, he attended University of Maine and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering in 1944. During World War II, he served with the United States Navy as a Lieutenant (JG) in the Civil Engineering Corps. (Seabees) in the South Pacific Theatre. He was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon and Victory Ribbon and was honorably discharged from the United States Naval Reserves in 1953. Throughout his long professional career, Joe held engineering and consulting positions with United Shoe Machinery Corporation, Delta Engineering Corporation, Raytheon Company and Honeywell Inc. He enjoyed civic activities and was a Member of the Winchester Board of Selectmen, Chairman of the Lewis Parkhurst School Addition Building Committee, Chairman of the United Fund Drive and Member of the Town Meeting. He was also a member of the Winchester Country Club, Annisquam Yacht Club and the Yarmouth Port Historical Society. An avid genealogist and scholar of marine art, particularly painter W.H. Yorke, he also loved to sail, golf, curl and tinker around the yard. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Berna (Burnett) Butler and his brother Charles Waring Butler. He is survived by his son Joseph Warner Butler III of Gloucester, his son John Waring Butler of Camden, ME, his daughter Jill (Butler) of Woburn.
