Summer Adventures Await 2020 Cullman Scholars

Each year, a talented group of Kimball Union students receive an opportunity to embark on off-campus learning opportunities during the summer break. Last week, the Cullman Scholar Committee selected 10 students from the junior class to receive a 2020 Cullman Scholarship. These students will receive financial support for in-depth global experiences in an area of intellectual interest or passion.

The Cullman Scholarship Program was established in 1983 with a gift form Hugh Cullman ’42, allowing students to pursue programs that develop leadership skills, global and environmental awareness, and service to others.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive a Cullman Scholarship, one of The Academy’s most prestigious awards,” says Assistant Head of School David Weidman. “I’m absolutely certain you will be amazed at the depth and breadth of the opportunities before our recipients.”

“This experience was extremely valuable and helped me to develop a deeper understanding of something I am very passionate about,” remarks Willa ’20, who spent her Cullman Scholarship studying neuroscience at Oxford University last June.

In the summer of 2019, 11 Cullman Scholars pursued courses of study ranging from wildlife conservation in Yellowstone National Park to studying global health while practicing Spanish speaking skills in Peru, interning in private and public hospitals in the Dominican Republic, to studying filmmaking and writing in France.
