Called Up: Lucie ’21 Competes with Team France in Six Nations Tournament

Lucie ’21 returned to campus this week after competing with the French Women’s National Ice Hockey Team in the Six Nations Tournament as both the tournament’s youngest player, and the only French player representing an American high school.

“It was an incredible experience playing at the next level,” says Lucie, who was called up to the Women’s National Team after playing for France’s U18 team for two years. “It is an honor to represent my country. I know not many people get to do that.”

“All of the athletes are much stronger, much faster, much more physical,” she says of making the transition to the national team.

Lucie played left wing in all three of Team France’s tournament games. After a 4-1 loss to Slovakia in front of a packed rink, France turned it around in the second game with a 6-1 victory over Norway, which Lucie says, “is one of the best countries for hockey, ranked top 20 in the world.” This impressive win qualified France for the championship game against Hungary. Hungary won the game 3-2.

The Six Nations Tournament determines rankings for the upcoming Ice Hockey Women’s World Championships in April.

“I’m going back to France in December for a pre-world championship camp before heading to Germany, where the Division 1A World Championships will take place,” she says.

In the meantime, Lucie is back in classes on the Hilltop and continues to compete in girls varsity soccer and girls varsity ice hockey.

“Having a different experience at that level of play will hopefully bring back a sense of how one has to compete at that level to be successful,” says Mark Hudak, girls varsity ice hockey coach at KUA. “I hope she can share that with the team and it will be evident in the way that she plays this winter.”
