Andy '19 - Cullman Scholar at the Industrial Bank of China

Dustin Meltzer '05
Established in 1983 with a gift from Hugh Cullman '42, the Cullman Scholarship Program supports students in off-campus study opportunities. During the summer of 2018, nine scholarship recipients pursued courses of study ranging from serving as a medical intern in Warsaw, Poland to volunteering with Real Cochabamba Soccer Academy in Bolivia. Recently, Andy '19 gave a presentation at All School Meeting about his Cullman Scholarship interning with the Industrial Bank of China’s Green Financial Division.

Here's Andy:

This summer, I had the privilege of working with the Industrial Bank of China’s Green Financial Division. I began at their headquarters to observe the inner workings of the office and learn the factors that go into making an investment. I watched as analysts pored over research to create a proposal and as executives cooperated and compromised, even when they disagreed.

After becoming familiar with numbers, statistics, and reports, I wanted to ground the idea of sustainable investing in tangible experiences and visit companies that the Bank invested in. I visited three active investments; NIO, an electric car company in Shanghai, CATL, the leading Chinese battery company in Ningde, and an electric bus company in Jinan.

I am grateful to the Cullman family for providing me with an opportunity to explore the intersection between positive environmental impact and investment. It has introduced me to a potential career and pushed me out of my comfort zone to show me many new perspectives.

Thank you, Andy, for sharing your experience and stay tuned for more Cullman Scholarship news.
