Special Teams, Goaltending Lift KUA Over Stanstead

The Kimball Union Wildcats got a 24-save shutout from junior goalie Veeti Kohvakka and scored three powerplay goals to top Stanstead College 5-0 in Meriden on Saturday afternoon. After a slow start and some key saves from Kohvakka, the Wildcats went to work on the powerplay midway through the first as Tomas Mazura (1 G, 2A) converted on a one-timer to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter a strong penalty kill from forwards Drew Bennett (1 A) and Brian Carrabes (1 G, 1 A) resulted in a Carrabes tally just as the penalty ended. With a 2-0 lead starting the second period, the Wildcats got an outstanding goal from Sullivan Mack (1 G) with assists going to Zach Whitehead (1 A) and Mazura. Stanstead got into penalty trouble after that and the Wildcats made the visitors pay by scoring two five-on-three goals, the first from senior Devan Newhook (1 G, 2 A) and the second from senior Arlo Merritt (1 G). The 5-0 lead held up through the third with Kohvakka shutting the door at key times in the final frame.
