Another fantastic finish

Baseball sage Yogi Berra was right – “the game ain’t over ‘till it’s over.” The Wildcats started slowly against a strong and disciplined Cardigan Mountain team. Play during the first period was fairly even, but the Cardigan Cougars had significantly more shots on net and scored twice. KUA regrouped during the mid-game ice make and came out determined to take control, but Cardigan scored quickly on an odd caroom off a KUA defender’s skate, and the Wildcats started the third period down 3 – 0. Their play became progressively crisper, and Alex Hone finally got the Wildcats on the board with a powerplay goal. Sean Donoghue scored next on a great back door redirect and then scored again to tie things up. Then, with just over three minutes remaining, Jon Schafer rushed the puck and slid a perfect pass just above the goal crease to Jacob Hyjek who knocked it in for the go-ahead goal. This looked to be a Disney ending – an extraordinary come-from-behind victory, but Cardigan had other ideas. They pulled their goalie for an extra skater and scored to tie the game at 4 in the final minute. The two teams agreed to play a single five minute 3 v 3 overtime period. Jeremy Sigl took the faceff and drew the puck back to Alex Hone who passed back to Jeremy. He sent a quick saucer pass to Cam Tucker, and Cam skated in and scored to win the game 15 seconds into the overtime period.
