James A. Saggiotes

James Arthur Saggiotes April 30, 1923 - November 4, 2018 James Arthur Saggiotes, 95, of Concord, died peacefully surrounded by his entire family at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on November 4th. Jim was born in Newport, NH to Arthur and Georgia (Zarocanelos) Saggiotes on April 30, 1923. He graduated from Towle High School and Kimball Union Academy, and attended Middlebury College prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served on the Destroyer Escort USS Thornhill during WWII. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to Newport to join his father and brother in their family business, the Priscilla Sweet Shop. He was active in local and state politics, serving as Sullivan County Treasurer, as well as 16 years in the state legislature. He was elected to four terms in the NH House of Representatives and four terms representing District 8 in the NH State Senate where he served as Majority Leader. He was Deputy Director of the NH Civil Defense agency until his retirement in 1988. A longtime member of Beaver Meadow Golf Course, playing regularly until age 90, he was an avid golfer and a fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. For almost two decades, Jim enjoyed spending winters in Marco Island, Florida with his wife, Julie. He was a faithful parishioner of the Greek Orthodox churches of St. Vasilios in Newport and Holy Trinity in Concord. He also enjoyed being part of the Havenwood community for the past five years. Jim is preceded in death by his parents and brother Soterios (Sam) Saggiotes. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Julie Vloras Saggiotes, and three daughters and sons-in-law: Susan and Daniel Geiger of Loudon; Mary and Charles Weatherill of Concord; and Nancy and Michael Bujold of Concord. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Marissa Geiger, Caroline Weatherill, Peter Weatherill, Alison Bujold, Thomas Bujold and James Bujold, and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, November 7th from 4 to 6 pm at Bennett Funeral Home in Concord. Trisagion service will be held at 5 pm with Reverend Father Constantine Newman officiating. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 8th at 10 am at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Newport, NH with Reverend Father Agathonikos Michael Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport. Arrangements are entrusted to the Bennett Funeral Home of Concord.
