KUA beats Cushing in 8-5 thriller

The highest scoring match of the season finishes 8-5.
The sun was shining and there was a nice cool breeze, the perfect day for soccer, as KUA jogged out on Grenier field and produced a display of brilliance and also calamity. There are many ways to describe this match, but boring is certainly not one of them…

The first goal was an absolute gift for Sean Donoghue from the Cushing goalkeeper from a goal kick. After he received the ball he promptly launched it over the keeper to the left side of the goal to give us the first goal after 4 minutes. Six minutes later Carlos won the ball in the midfield and played a through ball for Xavier to burst through the defense and run on to, he slid it past the goalkeeper to put us up by two. At 34 minutes Anthony Fresolone made a fantastic save to keep our lead intact. Unfortunately, it was only a minutes later that he was picking the ball out of the back of the net, after a cross from the left was not dealt with. Just before the half KUA won a corner. After a goalmouth scramble the ball came out to Jeremy Sigl who controlled it well, turned and hit the top corner. So the first half finished 3-1.

It was only 1 minute into the second half when the goals started flying in left and right. Bridger played a long ball to Cole out on the right who first time volleyed it through the middle Jacob to run on to and slide it under the keeper. The chances kept coming. A few minutes later Jacob was played in again but a good save by the Cushing keeper prevented him. Jeremy hit the bar moments later with a header from a corner. Directly after Cushing scored on a breakaway, and then got another 2 minutes after that from an audacious effort that was uncharacteristically dropped by Anthony. Jacob Frowlein got his first of the season, a near post flick on from a corner crossed in by Jacob Hyjek. Moments later Cushing were awarded, and promptly scored a penalty. The score was now 5-4. Cushing got another breakaway goal and tied the game at 5-5. There was a lot of tension as we realized this game was far from over. Jacob Wennik assisted Xavier for his second of the day to return a slender lead and calm the strained nerves. The entire bench was on their feet as the action was non-stop the second half. Xavier got his hatrick a moment later after getting an assist from Yuki. Yuki was awarded a penalty a few minutes later for a foul just inside the area, around 30minutes into the second half. Yuki coolly passed the ball straight down the middle and the keeper dived out of the way to bring the score to 8-5. The last 10 minutes saw a few golden chances at both ends, but no more goals for either team.

KUA travels to St Pauls on Wednesday for our next match.
