Big W

After an overtime game and a 2 hour bus ride, some weary legs and foggy minds are to be expected. This is what was seen on the field in the first few minutes of this game. The Cats had given everything they had the night before and they were really digging deep. It helps when a cross from Ariana Ftorek gets through all of the defenders and Eva Rossmassler standing on the back post is ready and tips the ball home for a 1-0 lead. This seemed to invigorate the girls and just 2 minutes later Ariana hammered a ball past the goalie for a 2-0 lead. In he 2nd quarter, the play was a bit more balanced with Austin Prep getting a little chippy. The Cats began to use the speed of their passes to exploit holes in the defense and after some great passing the Cats cushioned their lead with another goal from Ftorek. As KUA settled in, clearly tired form the night before, Austin Prep began to tilt the field. They applied pressure and finally broke through with just over 2 minutes left in the half. After the break, leading 3-1, KUA took the field and worked tirelessly. The defense was under siege and bent but did not break. Caroline Daft was creating many turnovers with block tackles and kept transitioning to offense, but it was a bad break that allowed AP to transition and convert a 4 on 1 into a goal. Now 3-2, a frustrated team made positive things happen. The group moved the ball upfield got it to Ariana Ftorek who scored her 3rd goal of the game. 5 minutes of battle later and off a big ball, AP again score on an odd numbered rush against. In typical fashion, there was no head hanging, and off the restart it took just 21 second for Ariana Ftorek to get the ball downfield and into the net for her 4th of the game, with just 4:07 left on the clock. Playing smart defense first hockey for the rest of the game, KUA left Austin Prep with a 5-3 win and are now getting ready to take on St. Paul's Friday.
