2022 Cullman Scholars Set Out to Create Lasting Change

KUA students are increasingly invested in making a tangible impact on the world, and this is particularly true among this year's Cullman Scholar Program participants. This year's cohort focuses on the environment, technology, and the arts as avenues for positive change.

Ryan '23 - Studying Molecular Medicine, Psychology and Artificial Intelligence at Oxford University, Oxford, England

“Since I was very young, I have been interested in biology and anatomy, as well as cognitive function and the way that people think. When I am older, I would like to research neurological disorders and how human behavior can be explained. This program allows me to bridge the gap between my interests, as molecular medicine involves cellular biology, psychology and artificial intelligence research.”

Anna '23 - Participating in the Commercial Dance Intensive at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee in Boston, MA

“Given the opportunity to partake in the Commercial Dance Intensive at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, I will have the honor to learn from many accomplished dancers and get a closer look at what it means to be a part of the professional dance industry. I want to challenge myself through this program to expand my horizons and really step out of my comfort zone. This program will provide me with the experience and skills to choreograph and direct a group.”

Wenshi '23 - Studying at The Ross Program’s Advanced Mathematics Institute at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, OH

“The Ross program is the perfect opportunity for me to pursue my goal of becoming a pure mathematician. It was the elegance and intricacy of number theory that caused my interest in pure mathematics. The program will also shape me into a more competent leader and communicator.”

Mica '23 - Working with Coastal Fisheries Research Lab in Biscayne Bay, FL

“Some people might find it strange that fly fishing has shaped my life, but through fishing I have gained a love for the outdoors and a passion for protecting it. The bonefish project appeals to me because this research will have a profound and lasting impact on the future of the bonefish population in Florida, the Bahamas, and Mexico. The opportunity to work side by side with a fish ecologist will be a valuable learning experience about how teams work together to conduct research.”

Evan '23 - Interning at Sotheby’s Summer Institute Program in New York, NY

“The Sotheby’s Art Business program combines two of my largest academic and occupational interests while being immersed in New York City. Participation in this program will not only supply me with an incredible understanding of art markets, auction houses, and investing, but also advance a career interest I could continue to explore in college and beyond.”

Emily '23 - Studying with the SLAI Computer Science Program at Carleton College in Northfield, MN

“I really enjoy learning about different algorithms in computer language, as they provide good exercises for solving real-life problems. The Summer Liberal Arts Institute at Carleton College offers me the opportunity to continue learning Computer Science in depth, with other passionate students interested in the same field, all under the guidance of leading professors. The program will not only prepare me for my future in college, but also develop my understanding of the field, and help me become a more open-minded student.”

Anna '23 - Attending the Young Writer’s Workshop at Bard College in Great Barrington, MA

“The Young Writers Workshop is an opportunity to explore multiple genres within creative writing, such as personal narratives, short stories, poems, and dramatic works. Instead of focusing on one specific genre, the program will encourage me to think through writing, try many genres, be sensitive to voice, and explore the world. The program prioritizes the process of writing instead of the finished product, which I believe will help my growth as a writer and a scholar.”

Angie '24 - Working with Smart Farms and Sustainability in Korea

“It is heartbreaking for me to see news about global warming and how it is destroying our ecosystems and ruining our environment. As the issue of global warming rises, there are fewer young farmers left. This is not just a simple problem of losing farmers, but a more complicated problem we need to solve for our present and future. Through this experience, I firmly believe that I will become a better leader, thinker, creator, and student who is passionate about my interest in technology and our environment.”

Fiona '23 - Participating in the International Diplomacy Youth Leadership Program in Washington, DC, along with a follow up internship

“The program at Georgetown University will help me learn about human rights issues on an international scale. We will study topics such as the theories of international relationships, refugees, human rights, and aspects of conflict and peace at a college level. I will then be able to return home to see these current themes reflected in my internship. This will be the perfect way for me to reflect some of what I have learned into the real world and beyond the KUA community.”

Henry '23 - Pursuing an internship with Light Manufacturing on solar-based carbon-free manufacturing in Pismo Beach, CA

“I am eager to learn more about the science and technology behind Light Manufacturing. Not only is it cutting-edge and potentially meaningful to many people, I also have a personal interest in this type of industry. Eventually, efforts like this can improve the lives of millions while helping alleviate pollution through a carbon-free process.”
