Ian Gregory-Davis '13 Elected All School President for 2012-13
Ian Gregory-Davis ’13 was recently elected All School President for the next academic year. Ian is a student-athlete and artist who plays three varsity sports (tennis [captain], basketball, soccer) and had roles in both Romeo and Juliet and Bat Boy - The Musical this academic year. He has also been in a dance concert, and is a member of KUA’s a capella groups “The Concordians” and the “Selects.” Ian is an Admissions Head Tour Guide and a Day Student Proctor and a High Honors student.
The following is the speech Ian gave at All School Meeting prior to his election:
Ever since I was little, playing on the turf or in the basketball gym, Hide and Seek in Flickinger or Fitch, eating in the Dining Hall, I knew I wanted to be a student here so I could be like all the big kids who so nicely tolerated me as a child. And, now here I am…
Good Morning!! For anyone who I have not introduced myself to yet, my name is Ian Gregory-Davis, and KUA has been my home for my entire life. Some people say I live in the best of both worlds as I am a day student who lives on the top of the hill, enjoying all the benefits of a boarder. I stand before you today, first and foremost, because of my love and passion for this school. I love everything about this school, but what I love the most is our sense of community. I believe that KUA is a place where everyone has a voice, and everyone’s voice is valued. For everyone to feel that they have a say, they need someone who they feel is not only willing, but happy to hear their ideas. One of my greatest strengths is being able to listen carefully to students’ ideas and then helping them come to fruition. I also believe that I can relate to almost every group or person here at KUA, whether a freshman, senior, day student, border or staff member. I cannot possibly imagine that there is anyone here who would be afraid to come up to me and present an idea he or she might have.
My main goal for this upcoming school year is for everyone to enjoy and get as much out of their KUA year as they possibly can, whether through all school meetings, classes, weekend activities, or sporting events. Every year I have been here, the school has become a better place in which to learn, live and enjoy. Being here has given me many opportunities to try new things which I would not have thought to involve myself in before. I would love to help other people step outside their comfort zone too, and get the most they can out of their years here. As a community, we can all keep moving forward together.
I believe one of the roles of the all-school president is to be a bridge between the students and faculty and I would take that job seriously from the very beginning, meeting with individuals, groups, clubs, students and faculty alike.
Part of my vision for next year, which came from visiting some colleges over Spring Break is incorporating all clubs more fully into our daily life here at KUA. Many more people on campus might be involved with our clubs, if they knew more about them. I already have ideas for next year’s club fair that will not only make the fair super fun and interesting, but will also be at a time when everyone will be able to come and sign up for the various clubs so EVERYONE can be involved.
Sitting on the Student Council these past three years has made me very aware of the amount of power that we, as a community and as a student body have, to create the best possible environment in which to live, learn, and have fun. If I am chosen as All-School President, I will put 100% of my time into being actively involved in all aspects of this school as well as making sure that everyone’s voice is heard and honored and helping everyone have the best year we possibly can here on The Hilltop.
