Head of School

Mike Schafer
Welcome to Kimball Union Academy.
Education begins, evolves, and endures through positive relationships that build connections to self and others, to ideas and principles, and to the work at hand. These relationships are in abundant evidence in the diverse faces and spaces of Kimball Union, where mission and goals are intentionally woven deeply into the fabric of the learning community. When students and faculty are in mindful interplay to develop cognitive, behavioral, and affective aspects, active learning through individual and community expression and performance is everywhere.
In every area of Kimball Union, we work actively with students to equip them with 21st century skills. Individual growth, engagement, and the development of interdisciplinary academic tools, social skills, and habits define our program. For most students, this leads to the discovery of passions in new areas of study. We provide a breadth of educational opportunities and allow for a deeper dive into the knowledge and mastery that enables each student to be a contributor in their chosen field. Our students are confident, life-long learners who are successful communicators and leaders.

During the 2018-2019 school year, Mike will work with the Board of Trustees on the external affairs of the Academy. During his tenure, the Academy’s endowment nearly tripled and now supports several areas of student and faculty life. He will help with the ongoing efforts to further strengthen the endowment.
