Athletes of the Week - January 29, 2009
Kellie Joyce, Girls Varsity Hockey; Steve Mastalerz, Boys Varsity Hockey
Kellie Joyce scored 5 points for the varsity girls hockey team, leading them to victories over Vermont Academy and Berwick Academy. Against Vermont Academy, she had 2 assists and one goal, leading KUA to a 6-4 win. She tallied the only KUA goal in a loss to Governor's Academy and she scored the KUA game winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Berwick Academy. This sophomore forward possesses an outstanding work ethic and she continuously strives to improve herself and her teammates.
Steve Mastalerz won back to back games in goal for the KUA Wildcats this week, both on the road. In a 6-1 win at Brewster Academy, Mastalerz had 18 saves on 19 shots including several terrific stops in the first period to protect the momentum KUA had been building. The next night Mastalerz was instrumental in a 3-2 win at rival Tilton School. The sophomore goalie made 35 saves on 37 shots and no save more impressive than the one off a rebound late in the third period. With a one goal lead, the puck popped into the slot where a Tilton player was left all alone, as he released the shot, Mastalerz came out of nowhere to get a pad out saving the game tying goal and securing the KUA victory. So far this season Mastalerz has a .934 save percentage and 1.76 Goals Against Average, very strong numbers that have been key in several victories for Boys Varsity Hockey.
