Learn to speak French, Chinese, Spanish, or English as a Second Language (ESL), or dramatically improve your fluency in these languages, at KUA this summer. Kimball Union Academy partners with Dartmouth College’s Rassias Center to bring you the renowned Accelerated Language Programs (ALPs). Participants can take full advantage of the exclusive language instruction expertise of the Rassias Center- home to the nation’s premiere intensive language learning program started by Dartmouth Professor John Rassias thirty years ago.
Based on the premise that participants learn best when they are active, Master Teachers and highly trained Assistant Teachers lead participants in activities, drills, songs and stories designed to build basic language skills and cultural understanding while having fun. Each day is filled with many different activities, ranging from making burritos under the supervision of local chefs to singing Chinese songs in authentic apparel at lunchtime to storming the "Bastille" with water balloons! The opportunities for learning while having fun and meeting people from all over the world are endless, and summer participants can now choose from a wide array of languages and levels of instruction.
Enrollment Options
In 2010, we are pleased to offer flexible attendance plans which fit your summer schedule. You may enroll for either of the following two-week programs, as a boarder living in Kimball Union Academy's dormitories, complete with many fun evening and weekend activities and all meals provided, or as a day participant, attending classes Monday through Friday with lunch provided:
Session I : July 5 to July 16 (registration on July 3)
Session II : July 19 to July 30 (registration on July 18)
Tuition: $2600 per session - boarding
$1350 per session - day
Instruction in French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered in both sessions, and you may take introductory, intermediate, or advanced levels of classes in those languages. It doesn't matter which session you choose; just select the two-week session that best fits into your busy summer plans. At the end of the two weeks, you will be confident and accomplished in the language you choose, familiar with the people and customs of many different lands and regions around the world.
If you are an international applicant, interested in a total ESL (English as a Second Language) experience, complete with Rassias Method English language classes, cultural immersion and travel all around the Northeastern United States, we offer a four week program from July 3 to July 30. ESL students will be accompanied by ALPs staff members on trips to museums, historic sites, and other cultural/entertainment centers from Fenway Park to see the Boston Red Sox play baseball to New York City's Radio City Music Hall. This is a unique opportunity to learn the language and customs of the U.S., and all in just one month!
