NAIS Names Lyn Lord “Teacher of the Future”
Meriden, NH, July 7, 2011 –Kimball Union Academy History Department Chair Lyn Lord was selected by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) as part of the 2011-2012 Teachers of the Future program. The NAIS Teachers of the Future were selected from a large pool of nominees who inspire academic excellence in students and who serve as opinion leaders among their colleagues and peers. The Teachers of the Future were also chosen for their expertise in particular areas— environmentalism, globalism, technology, and equity and justice—which NAIS believes are hallmarks of a high-quality education for the 21st Century. As one of only 25 teachers nationwide chosen for the program, Lyn Lord will lead an online discussion forum designed to share innovative ideas and teaching techniques and she will create a demonstration video to inspire others.

Lyn earned a BA from Dartmouth College in anthropology and returned to Dartmouth as a teaching fellow in the MALS program, earning an MA in anthropology and history. Lyn also entered a doctoral program at Harvard in Anthropology. She left to resume her teaching in independent schools. Lyn has taught in independent schools in Connecticut and Massachusetts for 15 years before returning to the Upper Valley. Lyn teaches world history, European history, US history and Anthropology. A proponent of the creative use of technology, she introduced an innovative approach to teaching world history using a video simulation called Civilization III that has become the model for fellow educators and has prompted the manufacturer to institute an educational division. In between classes, she advises the school newspaper.

The Klingenstein Foundation offered NAIS a generous grant for the Teachers of the Future program and through this grant, each teacher will receive a $1,000 stipend for participating in the program.
